Urate crystals (commonly called "brick stain" by doctors) are a combination of calcium and urate, substances normally found in urine. Crystals of the substance often form, leaving a red-orange stain in your baby's diaper — which can be alarming for parents!
Any baby can spill urate crystals, though it's more likely when a baby is dehydrated (or even just slightly dry) as the urine becomes more concentrated. They're most common in the first few weeks of life, especially if the baby is breastfeeding and the mom hasn't yet developed a good milk supply.
If you notice urate crystals, talk to your baby's doctor. She may ask you about feedings and weight gain, your milk supply if you're nursing, and signs of dehydration in your baby — such as decreased saliva, dry lips, going six hours without a wet diaper, and lethargy. And she may suggest increasing feedings. But as long as your baby isn't dehydrated, urate crystals are no cause for concern.
